Places to Visit in Malé

  • National Museum of Maldives and Sultan Park: If you are eager to know about this island’s history then you must visit Male. The National Museum in Sultan Park is worth visiting as some of Maldives’ royal families have lived here. It boasts of an extensive collection of historical artefacts including objects from stone age to royal antiques from Buddhist era to the reign of Islamic rulers.
  • The Grand Friday Mosque: This mosque is an architectural delight in Male. It is the largest in the Maldives and can accommodate almost 5000 people at a time. The golden dome of the mosque and the interiors ornamented with Arabic calligraphy, exquisite wooden carvings and stunning chandeliers are one-of-its-kind that instantly attracts visitors’ attention.
  • Utheemu Ganduvaru: It is a wooden palace of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu which is now a museum. This well-preserved museum showcases the lifestyle of the royals, ages ago. You will be fascinated to see 500-year-old wooden interiors, elaborate wood carvings, swing beds, beautiful lamps and a large palm-thatch shed used for the guests as their sleeping room.
  • Banana Reef: Known as one of the top locations for diving in the world, Banana Reef is the first diving spot in the Maldives to be recognised for licensed diving and training. The reef is full of exotic marine life, amazing coral and cliffs. It is a hub for various adventure activities such as Snorkelling, Jetskiing etc.
  • Artificial Beach: As the name suggests, its an artificial beach located in North Male Atoll. Also known as the carnival beach, it hosts fairs, peaceful walks and water sports making it a favourite spot for the swimming enthusiasts. This beach is popular for its musical evenings as several music groups come together to jam and perform here each day. Not to be missed spots on this beach are Manta point, Shark point, Kani corner and Nassimo Thila.

The best place to shop in the Maldives is Malé. You can take back some souvenirs other than local jewellery made from coral and seashells. Here are a few shopping spots that are worth visiting.

Malé local market: This place has several souvenir shops selling exciting items like miniature boats, slippers made of palm leaves, decorative products made from seashells, wooden vases and mat. You must try the street foods and carry cash.

Majeedhee Magu: Another great place for street shopping. You can find almost everything starting from fabrics to clothes to locally crafted items to electronics to delectable food.
