How to reach

By Air: Shahjalal International Airport or Dhaka Airport is the largest airport in Bangladesh, located about 20km away from the north of the city. IndiGo operates non-stop flights between Dhaka and various Indian cities.

By Bus: You can also reach Dhaka by bus from Kolkata and Agartala. The Kolkata-Dhaka bus service, jointly operated by the West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation and the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC).

Places to visit in Dhaka

  • Lalbagh Fort: Take out some time from city’s hustle bustle and visit this unfinished monument – Lalbagh Fort in old Dhaka. The fort complex comprises of three complete monuments – the Diwan-i-aam, the Mausoleum of Pari Bibi and the three-domed Quilla Mosque. Do check out the Mausoleum of Pari Bibi as it is the most distinct one to be built with white marble, black basalt and different coloured tiles. Diwan-i-aam, a beautiful two-storey structure has its own appeal with a small museum filled with miniature paintings, carpets, coins and swords from the Mughal era.
  • Ahsan Manzil: Another prominent historical monument is the beautiful pink palace – Ahsan Manzil located along the banks of the Buriganga river in Old Dhaka. It was the official residential palace of the Nawab of Dhaka. Interestingly, Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India (1898–1905), used to stay in this palace, whenever he visited Dhaka.
  • Liberation War Museum: Located at the centre of the city, the Liberation War Museum will take you on a journey of Bangladesh entire freedom struggle; starting from British regime to their 9-month long Liberation war in 1971. The museum details Bangladesh’s story of freedom struggle through various images (which might be disturbing), personal items displaying a short story of the owner.
  • National Museum: After visiting the Liberation War Museum, if your history bug is still not satisfied then take a tour of the Bangladesh National Museum. The massive four-storey museum is among the largest museums in South Asia. It holds three auditoriums, a library, photographic gallery, large exhibition halls, a temporary exhibition hall, an audio-video division and a conservatory laboratory. The journey to the museum will be a quite insightful as the museum showcases unique collections of paintings, sculptures, porcelain items, metal work, weapons, medieval armoury, wooden furniture, fossils and many more that share the story about the ancient civilisations existence in Bangladesh.
  • Dhakeshwari Temple: Another essential place to visit in Dhaka is Dhakeshwari Temple wherein Dhakeshwari means the Goddess of Dhaka. Built in the 12th century the temple holds national importance and considered to be the most important Hindu place of worship.
